Is it Luck?

Is It Luck?

Have you ever been in a situation where everything just fell into place — and you walked away thinking, “Wow, that was lucky”?
We usually call something luck when we can’t explain it, when the pieces fit together in a way we didn’t expect.

I once heard a pastor say something that shifted my entire perspective. I’ll get to that shortly — but first, let’s talk about how we normally respond.

It’s easy to thank God when something good happens.
But even when what we prayed for hasn’t happened yet, sometimes we can still feel things moving… aligning… shaping… as if an invisible hand is already working behind the scenes.

We often label those moments as luck.
But is it really?

David’s “Lucky Escape” — Or Was It?

Think about David.

In 1 Samuel 23:24–29, Saul had completely surrounded him. David was trapped. From every direction, an army pressed in, and there was no way out. He was inches away from death.

And then — at the very last second — a messenger ran to Saul:

“Hurry and come; the Philistines have invaded the land!” — 1 Samuel 23:27

Just like that, Saul had to leave.
David escaped.

On the surface, it looks like pure luck.
Perfect timing.
A coincidence that saved a life.

But what was David thinking during all this?
Was he panicking?
Was he frozen in fear?
Or was he quietly confident?

We know the answer because David wrote about this moment.

Psalm 54 — David’s Heart in the Middle of Danger

Psalm 54 was written during this exact season — when the Ziphites betrayed David and Saul hunted him.

The psalm opens with a cry:

“Save me, O God, by your name.” — Psalm 54:1

But it ends with something astonishing:

“For He has delivered me out of all trouble.” — Psalm 54:7

David wrote this before he was rescued.
Before the messenger reached Saul.
Before the escape.

To David, God’s deliverance was so certain that he spoke of it in the past tense — as if it had already happened.

It wasn’t luck.
It wasn’t coincidence.
It was confidence in God’s care.

So… Is It Really Luck?

Now back to what the pastor said:

“It’s not luck.
It’s the customized love of God.”

Not generic love.
Not random kindness.
But a personalized, tailored, intentional love — crafted uniquely for you.

A love that steps in at the right moment.
A love that arranges things you don’t see.
A love that protects you even when you didn’t know you were in danger.

We often brush these moments aside:
“That was lucky.”
“What a coincidence.”

“Things just worked out.”

But if we stop and look closer, we begin to see a pattern — a divine fingerprint.

The Customized Love of God

If only we would stop calling it luck.
If only we would pay attention instead of brushing it off.
We would realize how deeply, personally, purposefully God loves us.

So coming back to the question, is it luck? For me, it is

The Customized Love of God.
