The Beatitudes - 2
Blessed are those who mourn,
For they shall be comforted. - Matthew 5:4
What is the quality that Jesus talks about here? "MOURN". What does it mean to mourn?
Mourn : to feel or express grief or sorrow.
A person can mourn only if they feel truly sorry - sorry from the heart. Is it possible to fake mourning? No. Fake crying is not mourning; it's just acting. When does a person mourn? A loss of something or someone and regret are the two reasons that come to mind.
A loss of something or someone is something which we can't do anything about, other than finding comfort in God and hoping that we would meet them face to face someday.
The other reason - REGRET - is something that is within our control. If we truly regret something and confess it to God, He is able to comfort us. I love how David expresses his regret. He talks about his regret in many of his Psalms. For example,
I am weary with my groaning; All night I make my bed swim;
I drench my couch with my tears. - Psalms 6: 6
For my iniquities have gone over my head;Like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. - Psalms 38:4
These are just a glimpse. When there is regret, what do we do? I, for one, can go deep into a rabbit hole of self-pity. I can cry my eyes out, thinking that I am the worst person of all. It’s okay to do all that. David did that too, but with one major difference: He takes it to the Lord. The Lord comforted him.
The Lord has heard my supplication;
The Lord will receive my prayer. - Psalms 6:9For in You, O Lord, I hope;
You will hear, O Lord my God. - Psalms 38 : 15
If we truly regret from our heart, God will comfort us.
As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us. - Psalms 103:12
So, is it okay to make the same mistakes again and again and then regret them? If we truly regret, we wouldn’t repeat the same mistake. God sees our hearts and knows if we are genuinely sorry for what we did. We might not change what we did, but we can definitely change the outcome -
Self-pity or Forgiveness ?
